Antique pocket watches have been competed over by vintage item collectors from all over the world. During the early times, watches were initially designed big and square in shape. They were firstly owned by true aristocrats making them as authentic status symbol of wealth and history.
Clocks were originally used in weights and were huge. The pocket watch was made possible through the overture of springs. So instead of clock weights, this enabled watches to be worn with the use of chain. They were more practical although they were still considered larger than timepieces today. Precision also became very important for watch makers during those times.
Antique pocket watches can be seen among plaid-clad gentlemen wearing monocles. At the end of the long chain hanging off his lapel is a pocket watch which was the only type of watch that is available during that time. The pocket watches were so into fashion that men and women gave them as gifts and wore them as a symbol of power and wealth. But as years went on, the importance of watches became such that everybody had to own one.
The pocket watches were easy-to-use while keeping track of time. Very well that some watches were passed on trough generations in the family and a few extremely reliable antique pocket timepieces still exist in some families now.
As great as they are, antique pocket watches need special care and cleaning procedure. Some things must be considered regarding classic pocket timepieces. Pocket watch crystals were predominantly made round since other shapes were hard to make then.
The crystals were glassy and hand-blown broken glass faces repair is possible but handmade crystals are hard to find now. Modern glass crystals are available as raised, flat or domed depending on your need. A few sizes are available so you need not file the edges of the glass facing for a perfect fit. Hunting case crystals are the only gems which are hardest to find as they should be thin and beneath the watch surface.
Antique pocket watches are not elegant, distinctive and charming which make excellent gifts and true collector’s items as they have sentimental values that calls for the most proper maintenance and repair when the need arises.
